After a year and a half in Butchertown, WFPK and club DJ Matt Anthony is moving his Matt Anthony’s Record Shop to Crescent Hill, and taking a former neighbor’s bookstore with him.
MARS has been stationed in the Tim Faulkner Gallery compound during its first 18 months, alongside the gallery and several other retailers, such as Paul Wheeldon’s Second Hand Books. Now, the two culture sellers are joining forces at 2354 Frankfort Ave., with a grand opening scheduled for Friday, January 17th.
The new store, located between Ewing and Keats, will join an ever-increasing list of old media retailers on Frankfort, including newer record stores Guestroom and Modern Cult, both in Clifton, and veteran Carmichael’s Bookstore in Crescent Hill.
In a statement, Anthony said his and Wheeldon’s stores “compliment each other quite nicely and will fit snugly in the Crescent Hill neighborhood. With a strong point of difference, the two look not to compete with the other book and record shops on Frankfort Ave. but create a comprehensive shopping experience for lovers of the arts.”
He adds that his shop – voted “Best Place to Buy Vinyl” in LEO’s Readers Choice issue – is “expanding and looking to continue to champion Louisville’s vibrant music scene.”
Anthony worked at ear X-tacy for a decade before that store closed in 2011.
About the book part, his statement says, “London book dealer Paul Wheeldon creates the feel of a British book shop in the heart of Louisville. With his country’s style and love for the written word, Mr. Wheeldon fills his shop with Classic Literature, Art, History, Biography, Travel Logs, Esoterica and Rare / hard to find books. It’s usually tea time at the shop and sipping tea and talking books with the whip smart Brit is part of the experience.”
